Keswick First XV's final league game of the season was at home against lower mid-table Millom on Saturday 8th April. Conditions were completely different from the previous Saturday, with dry and warm conditions promising a day of open running rugby. Already promoted to the North Lancs/Cumbria League for next season, Keswick's supporters were looking for a convincing win to end the season.
The players did not disappoint. Dominant in the set pieces and quick to win loose ball, the forwards soon provided the backs with plenty of good and usefully possession to exploit. Winning the first scrum against the head, the pack released Matty Scott who broke through to score under the posts. With the conversion missed, Keswick soon increased the pressure, just failing to score from the kick-off as the final pass was forward.
Millom's tactic of kicking away possession from hand, and failing to find touch from penalties, played to Keswick's strengths with the second try, by George Holme, coming from a missed touch. The successful conversion made the score 12-0 after only 12 minutes. A line-out steal by Keswick gave them another scoring chance which was not achieved because of another forward pass. Millom were then able to maintain periods of pressure but another missed touch from a penalty resulted in Keswick running the ball back from their own 22 for Harry Vaillant to score on the left, converted by Andy Muir, 19-0 after 19 minutes.
From the resulting kick-off Jamie McKenzie ran through the Millom players from the 22 to be brought down just short of the try line, with Michael Tait following up to score a try converted by Muir. The next re-start had the same result, this time captain Aaron Thompson being brought down and Millom getting the put-in at the scrum. Their quick strike was too quick for their scrum half though and Stephen Moss was able to dart over for another try, again converted by Muir, 33-0. A penalty kick to the corner and a line-out win allowed Vaillant to score his second try, Keswick's 6th, converted once more by Muir.
Some good Millom possession and forward drives ended with a turn over for Ollie Macpherson to score under the posts. The subsequent conversion brought the score to 47-0 and the half-time whistle saved Millom from further punishment.
The second half started with a better performance by Millom, eventually spoiled again by wayward kicking which led directly to a try by Christian Sellars. Keswick opted to blood a new kicker in the second half and it took a while for him to get the measure of the posts. Millom came close to the Keswick try line but lost possession and were lucky not to have another try scored against them as for the third time in the game the referee judged the final pass to have been forward. That respite didn't last long as there was quickly a further try under the posts, again unconverted.
Millom's poor restart technique allowed Keswick to attack immediately from the kick-off, with Moss scoring his second try, this time converted for Keswick to lead 64-0. To Millom's credit they refused to give up but their next attack was stopped by Macpherson who stripped the ball in the tackle and ran in to score his second try. After the restart a quickly taken penalty and a chip ahead allowed try number 12, soon followed by the thirteenth and last from Vaillant, to make the final score Keswick 81-0 Millom.
This was an excellent performance from a team brimming with self belief. It provided a great end to the league season and whilst Millom deserve some sympathy for being on the receiving end, it allows Keswick to face next week's cup final with confidence after a very successful league season.
