So the scene was set on Saturday, for a hard game and a desire for revenge for last season's result.
There was a sense of déjà vu however, when Egremont scored a try in the opening minutes after a defensive slip by Keswick giving them an early 5-0 lead.
This was the wake-up call that Keswick needed. From that moment on, Keswick took control of the game, starting with an excellent try from Dean Robinson after a rolling maul move by the forwards. This was followed five minutes later, with another try from Jamie Mackenzie after a strong and bustling run. Carrick Wharmby, who was prominent all day in a great forward effort scored the next try to take the score to Keswick 15 Egremont 5. Everyone in the club was happy to see Paul Ireland returning to the playing field after a long absence and he added a penalty shortly afterwards to take the score to 18 - 5. The final action of the first half saw Mike Tait, Keswick's outstanding forward, score a try after a rumbling forward movement of at least 25 m. Paul Ireland added the conversion to give a halftime score of 25-5.
The small band of travelling supporters were looking forward to another half of similar standard. It was Egremont, however, that started the better and immediately scored a try to take The score to 25- 10. This sparked Keswick back into life, and they gradually took a stranglehold on the whole game. Egremont lost their discipline, and the referee issued a series of yellow cards and one red card for violent play. To their credit, the Keswick team kept their discipline and used this to their advantage. Two more converted tries came from Sam Hooper who gave an excellent display all through the match on the wing. The second of these tries was an excellent full length of the pitch move started by Mike Tait who ran a good 50 m before releasing Hooper. Paul Ireland added both conversions.
Final score Egremont 10 Keswick 39. Overall this was one of the best performances of the season so far. The team is showing more control and discipline and the performance of the Keswick pack was outstanding. All supporters and the coaching staff now look forward to seeing this level of rugby being produced week in week out.
