With no single club in the county able to field a full side, the Keswick U12 girls joined forces with two players from Egremont and one from Cockermouth to take on a combined Penrith and Wigton team — a brilliant example of the county’s clubs working together to ensure the girls get the game time they deserve.
The sun was shining as the girls took to a larger-than-normal pitch, a deliberate choice to give them a taste of what’s to come when they step up to U14 in September. What followed was an end-to-end contest full of skill, heart, and determination from both sides, with attack and defence matched evenly throughout. Tries weren’t being counted on the day, but there were plenty of them — and plenty to celebrate.
Individual highlights on the Keswick side:
Grace took home Players’ Player honours for a standout display of line breaks, powerful ball carries, and well-taken tries.
Emilia was the Coaches’ Player — a deserving recognition for someone who never lets her size stand in the way of her determination. Her try-saving tackles and sharp line breaks on the wing were a highlight of the match.
Megan impressed with her rugby intelligence, consistently first to support her teammates and reading the game with real maturity.
Rosie got stuck in at every opportunity, showing tremendous work rate and commitment at the ruck.
Anna was quietly outstanding, delivering quick ball from ruck and scrum while providing excellent support play throughout.
Demi was a force with ball in hand, making metre after metre and taking defenders with her on every carry.
Sophia made a huge impact from the off, scoring the first try of the match — before an unfortunate knee twist brought her afternoon to an early close. We hope she’s back on her feet very soon!
Nancy showed real confidence, getting stuck in and moving the ball along the line with composure and assurance.
Madison led from the front with commanding tackles, some notable tries, and — perhaps most excitingly — a key new skill unlocked on the day: the kick and chase. One to build on!
A fantastic morning’s rugby. Well done to all the girls involved. ?
Special mention to the two u14 girls who, having recently completed the referee course in the club, offered to referee a half match each. Excellent to see the youth side of the club picking up the whistle and giving it a go! Well done Caitlyn and Maisie!
