Keswick welcomed Hawcoat Park last Saturday in Cumbria Division I. Lovely weather conditions promised open fast rugby, and so it turned out. Only two minutes into the game Keswick moved into a well deserved lead with a try by James Benson converted by Brian Storey to take a seven nil lead. To everyone's surprise Hawcoat Park hit back straightaway with their own converted try to bring the scores level. At this point, Keswick took full control of the game. This started with strong running by Andy Muir who scored a try converted once more by Brian Storey. The next passage of play saw Olly MacPherson break from his own half to run the length of the field to score a spectacular try. 10 minutes later after strong scrummaging from Keswick a very good back row move lead to scrum-half Brian Storey being released to score a further try. The final play of the half saw Johnny Robinson steal a lineout from the opposition and the ball moved through several pairs of hands for an excellent try by Danny Price which was converted to give Keswick a half-time lead of 33 pts to 7
The second-half started the way the first half finished with Keswick in control and Ryan Weir picking up the ball from virtually his own line and running the length of the field to score under the posts. Less than 10 minutes later it was veteran Andy Wallace's turn to finish off and take the score to 47 to 7. At this point, two things happened, the opposition started to wake up and Keswick went to sleep. After determine pressure on the Keswick line, Hawcoat Park managed to score a try to take their points tally to 12. Keswick came back however, with the last play of the game where George Holme went in close to the posts for a final converted try. Final score 54 to 12.
The team put in an efficient and technically strong performance. They remain unbeaten. The next match is away at Aspatria on Saturday 13 October where Keswick expect a very stiff test. The 2nd team make the longest journey of the season next Saturday with a trip to Whitchurch in the Lancashire Cup competition.
