The 2017 AGM was held on Monday 17 July at the Clubhouse.

Keswick Rugby Club held the 2017 AGM at the Clubhouse on Monday last. The members were able to reflect on a very successful season and to look forward to the challenges of the forthcoming season.

The first team having achieved promotion to the North Lancs/Cumbria league for the 2017/2018 season they will be playing against some larger clubs further afield. The new league season starts on Saturday 2 September with a challenging home game against De La Salle (Salford) who were the North Lancs/Cumbria League runners up last season. Cumbrian opponents will be Aspatria, Barrow and Wigton, with most of the remainder of the league clubs based in the Greater Manchester area. As a season end event the Club intends to hold a 10-aside competition at the end of April 2018, more details to follow.

The second XV will continue to play in the Cumbria 2 League. The future looks bright with the junior rugby proving to be extremely popular and successful, allowing older players to look towards qualifying for the full Club sides in time. Junior parents are contributing well, helping with coaching as well as behind the scenes in the clubhouse. Sunday mornings have rarely been so busy and the AGM acknowledged with thanks the input from those parents.

Off the field, the success of the 21st annual Beer Festival was followed by the Samworth Brothers charity events, including a 4-man team triathlon in which the renowned Brownlee brothers competed; the Keswick Rugby Club team coming a very creditable second to the Brownlees’ team. Such events contribute to the financial needs of the Club and good progress is being made towards collecting the starter sum needed to replace the current Clubhouse which, having flooded on a number of occasions, is showing its age, as well as being smaller than the Club now needs. Plans for the proposed new clubhouse are available for scrutiny in the club. And sponsorship of home games is available should you want to gain publicity, treat colleagues, friends or employees, or just contribute to the success of the Club.

The Tony Bragg trophy for the greatest contribution to the Club over the last 12 months was presented by Margaret Bragg to Paul Weightman. Paul's work behind the scenes, especially in keeping the building freshly painted, has been very much appreciated.

On the officials side, Malcolm Craghill was re-elected as President, Liz Weightman as Secretary, Trevor Keough as Chairman and Jeremy Hall as Hon Treasurer. All other members of the committee agreed to stand for re-election.

New and returning players are always welcome, regardless of level and the new league means more regular fixtures, so more opportunity. If you think you need to hone your skills, or just enjoy a friendly run-out, Wednesday evening touch rugby will be on throughout the summer, starting at 6pm on the pitch. Although the league season doesn't start until September, it is hoped that the first fixture will be a Cumbria Cup game against Windermere, away, on 19 August. Details will be on the Club website.
